What does Ferris Bueller say? Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it. We don't plan on missing any of it. That requires staying active and healthy. That said, there were a few things we needed to do before traveling to ensure that we would be covered in case something out of the ordinary happened on our trip.
Health checklist
1. Get all of the required vaccinations for Mexico (or wherever). For me, these included yellow fever (there's no risk of it here, but I had to get it for Guatemala last year, and if you have a stamp from Guatemala on your passport, most countries want to see proof of the yellow fever vaccination), Tetanus, Typhoid, and a few other fun shots as well. The list is here, and it's a good reference to have. I didn't get a Rabies shot because it was expensive and it wasn't required, but I absolutely recommend getting one. It's just better to have that peace of mind.
2. Purchase international health insurance. One thing I didn't realize until about a month before we left was that my health insurance in the US wouldn't cover anything outside of the country. This was a surprise. So we purchased full coverage health insurance for Mexico. Now we are both covered in the US and Mexico for the next year.
3. Spencer also signed up for Obama-care. Since he is doing contract work, he's not receiving health insurance from a company this year. So having the additional coverage that Colorado provides is pretty important.
